Here is a super-fast checklist for brides who have collected their dresses and may not be wearing them for a while or recently married brides who don’t know what to do with their dresses!
1. Cool and dark
Silk dresses are not like people – they do not respond well to light and heat. Keep them out of sunlight and in the coolest room in your home.
2. Stretch free storage
If you have a tulle, sheer net or delicate lace top to your dress take it off it’s hanger and store wrapped on acid free tissue paper and an acid free box. These fabrics can stretch out of shape.
3. Secure it well
If your dress is in a breathable bag and you have room to hang it up, make sure it is secure – they get extremely creased if they fall off a hanger.
4. Leave it alone
Resist the temptation to keep looking at the dress or trying it on! Even perfume or sweat can discolour a dress over time.
5. The One With All The Wedding Dresses
Do not do a Monica - resist the urge to wear it around the house with your Friends!
6. Pretty boxes
Get in touch with companies like the Empty Box Company for pretty storage solutions.
7. Squeaky clean
If you are recently married email Terrington Burchett to find out about their availability, they run a country wide collection and delivery service for cleaning dresses.
8. Check your insurance
If your dress was over £1000 check to see if you need to add it to your home contents insurance.
9. Communication
If you are a bride who has had to postpone due to Covid-19, let your boutique or alterations company know your new date as soon as you know it. The interruption to the start of peak season is going to have a knock-on effect for the technical fitting side of everyone’s business.
10. Forget FOMO
Don't worry that you might be missing out on new collections – all the launches of all the new 2021 dresses have been postponed too. Your 2020 dress will be as fresh and cool and current in 2021!
